Human
Rights Watch: Costly Dream, Abuse of Migrant Domestic Workers
In
Asia, women from Indonesia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka are migrating in
increasing numbers to the Middle East, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong,
and Taiwan to work as live-in domestic workers. Magnum photographer
Susan Meiselas and Human Rights Watch researcher Nisha Varia traveled
to Indonesia and Singapore in May 2006 to witness and record the cycle
of migration at different stages: departure, employment, and return, to
address the conditions and legal framework for their work.
