Médecins Sans Frontières has been working in Northern Afghanistan since 1992 on projects aimed at bringing emergency aid to the Afghan population. Twenty years of warfare have seen the Afghan health care system suffer heavy blows. In order to meet the enormous needs, Médecins Sans Frontières started to set up a network of clinics in 1996: they provide primary health care with a special focus on mothers and children, and serve as bases for emergency operations in epidemics or natural disasters.
