Investing
in children is the title given by UNICEF to their program of
co-operation with the Cambodian government in developing the social,
economic and basic human rights of the country's children. Most
children are effectively denied a good start in life through the poor
health of their mothers, the lack of structured maternal and pre-natal
care and the results of the poor general education received by women,
nearly half of the female population over the age of fifteen have never
been to school and female illiteracy is at fifty-eight percent. With a
majority of children living in rural areas access to basic services is
low and those in urban areas exposed to risky behavior before the end
of adolescence the project attempts to deal with these issues through
increasing immunization, education and ending exploitation. John Vink
has followed the work of the various NGO's at work on the ground,
photographing the reality of the problems encountered and the solutions
being offered.
